Why Are So Many Home Workers Hiring Offices?

Every year, more and more of us start working from home. This can mean different things. Some people work from home for a company, either all or some of the time. Some run their own businesses out of their own home and others still work as freelancers, based at home, perhaps never going anywhere near a traditional employment setting. It’s thought that around 56% of the workforce spend at least some of their time working from home.

It’s something that appeals to many of us. The chance to work from home, around other commitments and responsibilities, without having to rely on expensive childcare or our partner’s schedules. Or just being able to set your own hours and work in your pajamas. Being able to work from home gives many people a fantastic opportunity to either carve out a successful career or to start up their own business when they wouldn’t be able to afford to do so with the added cost of a premise and office space.

However, many of these home workers seek out office space to rent. Office space, communal work areas and co-working locations are everywhere. The idea of working from home may appeal, but many home workers find that once the initial excitement has worn off, they need an office to work at their best. Even those with fully equipped home offices, often seek an alternative workspace at least some of the time. But why? What’s the point? Wasn’t the flexibility of working out of their own home a big selling point for getting out of traditional employment? Let’s take a look.

To Get a Better Balance

One of the main reasons that people choose to work from home is that they believe it will give them the chance to achieve a perfect work-life balance. Something many employees struggle with at some point during the course of their careers. Working from home gives you the chance to set your own hours and work around the rest of your life, what could be better?

Well, many homeworkers find that it’s a lot harder in practice than they’d hoped. They find that far from working around the rest of their lives, their work entirely takes over their lives. They work late into the night, they cancel plans to finish assignments, they never take days off, and they work more than ever. This can be especially true of freelancers, who take work when they want and earn for every separate project they do. It can be hard to say no.

Hiring an office space can be a huge help. It gives you a precise distinction between work time and home time. You can still go to the office at times to suit you and arrange your schedule around other areas of your life, but it becomes much easier to switch off at the end of the working day.


In the same way, it can be hard to work or to stop working without a set routine. Trying to do bits as and when you can, can mean that you work far too much or that your work is disjointed and of poor quality. Your family life can also suffer if you are struggling to give it your full attention.

We think that working from home will be fantastic. We imagine working in front of the TV, or in a gorgeous home office. We see ourselves lounging around, snacking and having cups of coffee whenever we feel like it. While always getting our work complete on time and to a good standard.

Some people can do this. They have no trouble working around the distractions of everyday life. They are easily able to organize their time, giving work their full focus when they need to and relaxing when they deserve it.

Others, can’t. They become distracted easily, find it hard to focus with so much distraction and spend most of the day avoiding work. An office space outside of the home can restore focus. It can give you a place that’s quiet and without distraction. You might find that you get your work done in much less time and to a much better standard when you are out of the home.

A Change of Scenery

Many of us experience creative dry spells, and although you may not realize, creativity is an essential quality in many fields of work. Sometimes, a change of scenery is all it takes to get your creative juices flowing again.

Giving yourself as many options as you can is a great way to make sure you never hit the wall creatively speaking. Try working in your garden or heading out for a short walk. You could work for an hour in a coffee shop or head to the office space that you’ve hired for a few hours. Options are always good.

To Get Out

Often home workers find they feel lonely. They miss seeing other people and being around colleagues. Hiring an office space means that you’ll get out of the house more, you’ll see other people more and you’ll start to make friends. It’s an easy way to reduce the loneliness of self-employment.

To Grow

Another option is hiring a whole office, instead of a section in a shared environment. Sometimes, this is necessary when it comes time for home run businesses to grow. Of course, you could hire other freelancers and home workers, but you’d be missing the sense of comradery and team that comes with working together in close quarters. It could be a great way to grow and expand your business.
