Trend Watch: Arctic Explorer

Polar bears and polo-necks, Arctic Explorer fashion is all over the high street.

Dressing for the Arctic is no easy feat. You’ve got long johns to consider, gore-tex middle layers, fur linings and…moon boots. These aren’t components you’d usually contemplate for a stroll around Borough Market. And yet, that’s exactly what this season is all about.

Columbus, Magellan, Sir Drake, Sir Raleigh, Cortes, Sir Hawkins…explorers have a particularly special place in our minds. Their symbolism is particularly important to our sense of male history. Good or bad, they represent so many of the traditionally “masculine” behaviours – strength, often athleticism, bravery in the face of the unknown, competitiveness and true grit.

It is interesting then, to see the explorer, with all of it’s “traditional male” connotations, brought into the fashion world and onto the urban streets, both scenes which have experienced a conscious over-throwing of masculine stereotypes in the last decade.

We’re not sure what this “toughening up” look is all about – maybe it’s supposed to be an antidote to all the skinny jeans and deep-Vs that have been so prevalent, but whatever it is, we kinda like it.

Here are some “Explorer” options…
