School’s Out – What’s Next?
School’s over, and whether you’re waiting for your exam results or you’ve just graduated from university, you’re probably thinking ‘what’s next’? Believe it or not, it’s ok not to know what you want to do with the rest of your life, especially when you can’t decide what to have for lunch today. You don’t have to decide your future right now, but it doesn’t hurt to see what options are out there. Get help deciding what happens now that school’s over with these tips for figuring out what to do next.
Go down the travel route
Now is probably a better time than any to travel. There aren’t many points in your life where you can simply pack a bag and leave your life behind for a little while. Once you start working and start growing up, it becomes more and more difficult to disappear for months on end, so you’d be wise to consider travelling now. Get a temporary job to help you save up some money and choose from top gap year destinations. You’ll have the time of your life and might even figure out what you want to do while you’re away from it all.
Get some experience
The beauty of the working world is that you don’t have to stay in a job forever. You’ve got the opportunity to try new things, see what fits and where you could end up seeing yourself in five or ten years down the line. Look for apprenticeships that will give you a flavour of an industry to help decide if it’s the right move for you. Alternatively, set up your own work experience placements for short-term tasters that will introduce you to different industries, while also helping you to make some key contacts for when the time comes to apply for jobs.
Start up on your own
Many people, particularly young people, have a clear idea of what they want to do with their lives. If you have a passion for something, why not turn it into your own business? There are plenty of satisfying self-employed careers out there that will enable you to work for yourself, keep all of your own profits and get the independence that many people wish they had in their careers. It’s a great way to get experience, as well as help you move up the ladder quicker than if you were to work your way up through a company.
Go back to school
Not quite finished with education yet? That’s ok too. You can always continue your studies by going to college, university or taking a postgraduate course. Studying can be expensive, so if you’re going to be putting money into your education, make sure you pick a subject that’s worthwhile. You could even try part-time study while you work to give you the best of both worlds.
Deciding what to do with the rest of your life can be tough, but it’s important to know that now is the time to try things and make mistakes. Take your time deciding on your future career and try to make the most of all the opportunities that come your way. You’ve still got your whole life ahead of you, so don’t rush into a choice you might regret later down the line.
