Genre: Martial Arts / Action
When to watch: When you want to imagine that you could kick the arse of any man that crosses your path.
Inspired by the real life of Wing Chun Grandmaster Yip Man (also known as Ip Man to some), Ip Man is a movie that creatively builds on his life and experiences as a Chinese Wing Chun expert in the 1930s.
If you haven’t heard of Yip Man and claim to be a fan of Martial Arts then you really are a bit of a fraud. His work helped to make Wing Chun a martial art that is practiced worldwide and his teaching lineage includes the late great Bruce Lee.
The film takes place during the Sino-Japenese war and focuses on Ip Man’s refusal to teach the occupying Japanese Soldiers his form of martial arts and also his efforts in teaching the local warehouse workers Wing Chun in order to allow themselves to protect themselves.
Donnie Yen, the biggest name in martial arts in China, takes on the role of the legendary Yip Man and gets involved in increasingly epic fight scenes (Choreographed by Sammo Hung of Martial Law fame) throughout the film.
By the end of the film you will want to hop on your computer to find out exactly what parts of the film are true and which parts are made up for the cinematic audience but what ever google reveals you’ll be left in awe of a great man, with an even greater legacy.
