Mike’s Monday Morning #Playlist: 13.01.13
There’s something for everyone this week!
Mike kicks off the playlist with a nod to 80s funk. Think Earth, Wind & Fire, think Sly & the Family Stone, think Rick James, think Prince – who turned up to a concert these guys were playing in LA and, by all accounts, went a bit mental.
Bad Rabbits are an outfit that formed in 2007, so they’ve been around a minute or two, but, if you believe the hype, this is they year they’re set to break the international scene. They’re being touted as some sort of bad boy metal-cum-punk-cum-funk outfit. Forget all that, they’ve got about as much hard core metal cred as Kid Rock. That doesn’t stop them from being a fun listen though. Their brand of dirtied up funk is more than pleasant.
Keeping with that vibe – J. Barnum’s mix of American DJ Kerri Chandler’s ‘Hallelujah’ is one of a collection of reworkings commissioned by King Street Sounds of the original house classic. His funky, sample driven remix is a great follow on from the Bad Rabbits track.
Progressing into deeper house, without the funky twist, we’ve got HNNY (pronounced “honey” – check out the Whinnie the Pooh sample on ‘Gymnastics’) with ‘Tears’. See if you can pin the massively pitched-down sample… the clue’s in the title.*
Finally, we move into a nostalgic kind of indie crooning with Childhood’s ‘Blue Velvet’. The track, released in 2012, is a soft, sweet ode to teenage house parties and hazy love connections.
