Mike’s Monday Morning #Playlist – 10.03.14
XWHY’s Mike Thomas selects the best of recent and brand spanking new music to wake you up on a Monday morning….
Mike’s leading with a smack-you-in-the-face Rick Ross / Jay Z pair-up. It’s the sort of tune that merits a low, deep nod. Bit of Rick Ross trivia for you – he’s got tattoos of AK-47s and his debut album was a reference to Miami being a major arrival destination for cocaine shipments. So…guess he ticks all the gangster boxes then.
Young Fathers are a hip hop trio from Edinburgh. This isn’t the first time we’ve featured them on the playlist – their track ‘I heard’ made the cut back in August. This track ‘Get Up’ is a slightly more frenetic output, from their album Dead. Apparently, according to Ninja Tune, it’s a track that feels as “if Michael Jackson is pulling it backwards into the darkness even as it appears to move into the light with a deathly moonwalk” – erm, sure it does…
After a rip-roaring start, we wind down just a little bit with 8th Grader and Glass Animals. Fluid electronic beats and a sweet falsetto over the top from Glass Animals.
Post-Soviet Bulgaria’s got to make for a pretty interesting musical up-bringing. Denitza Todorova, a.k.a DENA claims she listened to the RnB, rap and hip-hop that influences her music by way of un-ironic cassette tape playing, which obviously makes her totally fucking cool. She looks like a Vogue model, so it’s an interesting juxtaposition to hear her putting out dirty hip-hoppy tracks. We like it. You might too…
