Mike’s Monday Morning #Playlist – 02.12.13
We’ve got some great representation from the women’s corner on the playlist today. Micky Green, who features on Flight Facilities’ track ‘Stand Still’ has a cutesy, disarming vocal quality which, coupled with feathery white hair and eyes that would put Bambi out of business, give her a charming, childlike first impression. Somehow, she manages to inject a quiet, haunting melancholy to underpin the otherwise upbeat nature of her samples.
You could say very similar things about Maya Jane Coles, who appeared on the electronic music scene around 2008 and has steadily gained momentum ever since. Her vocals are of a sweet, staccato, La Roux-esque nature, but to make too many comparisons to the ‘Bullet Proof’ singer would probably be to do Coles a massive disservice. Coles is an extraordinarily talented producer in the pop, electro and dub fields. Stick ‘Stranger’ on, crank it up and listen to that carefully crafted bassline – it’s quite magnificent.
And then we’ve got Kate Beckinsale lookalike Kate Akhurst from the group Kate Boy. The Stockholm based group are a multi-talented bunch, who all write, produce and play each other’s instruments, apparently.
Together with these fierce females, we’ve got some delightfully transporting tracks from the likes of Bonobo and Fryars and some quietly affecting tracks from Aussie Josef Salvat and Londoner Mo Kolours.
