Martinez Appointed Everton Manager
The 39-year-old Spaniard, Roberto Martinez, has long been the favourite to take over from David Moyes as manager at Everton Football Club.
He wasn’t entirely a shoe-in for the role though. Despite winning the FA Cup, in his position as manager of Wigan Athletic, he also led the team to relegation from the Premier League.
As he signs a four-year contract at Goodison Park, Martinez inherits an Everton team that finished sixth in the Premier League last season.
Moyes, who spent 11 years at Goodison Park, was popular enough. He guided the team to regular finishes in the top eight. However, he never made any significant wins while at the club.
Feelings surrounding the appointment are largely positive. Former Everton striker Kevin Campbell considers Martinez to be “a breath of fresh air”. Famous for stylish plays and conservative spending, Martinez is likely to be able to work well within the Everton budget.
