No one enjoys feeling ill, tired, emotional, and snappy, but this all comes with being unhealthy.  You can’t deny that fact that it’s important to keep yourself happy and healthy, but, unfortunately, very few people take action to ensure that they do. There is plenty that you can do to keep your mind and body healthy; Some of this does require some planning, but some of it is simple. If you’re unsure where to start, then just follow these simple tips.

Eat Healthily

As I will mention later, this doesn’t mean tackling any fad diets, and it certainly doesn’t mean drastically cutting down on how much you eat; Eating healthily simply means ensuring that you eat a balanced diet, and get your five-a-day. You can even allow yourself to “cheat” every now and then, and eat the foods that you love rather than the ones that are most healthy. Chocolate is a great option, because, while it may not be conventionally healthy, it does give you an energy boost and helps to reduce stress. Your alcohol consumption, on the other hand, should be cut down, as drinking alcohol has links to a range of different health problems, including liver cirrhosis and even cancer.

Avoid Fad Diets

Fad diets and juice cleanses will do a lot more harm to you than good, so avoid them no matter the circumstances. Most people choose to undergo these diets as they claim to help you lose weight quicker than conventional methods, which may just be too tempting for those who don’t want to put the work in. While you may lose a little weight (most of which will simply be water weight), as soon as you go back to your regular eating you will put all of this weight back on and more. The only way for you to lose weight and keep the weight off is for you to change your lifestyle, and that means eating the right foods and moving more.

Exercise More

You might hate the idea of hitting up the gym, but if the most exercise that you do is walking down your stairs in the morning and back up them at night, then you may need to start thinking of ways to incorporate more exercise into your everyday life. Despite what I said about the stairs, they are a great way to do this, so avoid lifts at all costs. There is also plenty of exercises that you can do at home, such as push-ups, pull-ups, and squats, so there’s no need to fork out for a gym membership if you can’t stand the thought.

Drink More Water

Some of the symptoms of dehydration are pretty nasty, including dizziness, rapid heart rate, and fever; If you’re not careful, you can even go into a coma. This all sounds pretty scary, but what’s scarier is the fact that, despite all of these symptoms, few people drink as much water a day as it’s recommended by health professionals (Around 2 to 2.5 litres per day). Water is involved in a number of important processes within the body, so it’s important that you are drinking enough, otherwise, you’re body can’t function properly.

Protect Yourself From STIs

While STIs are a lot more treatable than they were a couple of decades ago, they can still massively impact your life in a bad way. Aside from giving up sex completely, there are a few things that you can do to protect yourself, the first being using a condom. It doesn’t matter if another form of birth control is being used at the time or not, you should always use a condom, as these other types of birth control won’t protect from STIs. You should also have regular STI checks, including an hiv test, especially if you think you might be at risk.

Do Things You Enjoy

It’s incredibly important to keep your body healthy, but the health of your mind requires just as much attention. Aside from the fact that life is short, and you shouldn’t spend it doing things you hate, doing what you love to do also has health benefits. One of the biggest is the fact that it reduces stress; When you have something to do that you don’t like doing, this causes stress, so you put off doing the thing, which causes you even more stress. This can make you feel very sick and tired, and can even lead to depression. To avoid this, eat the foods you like (in moderation, of course) and take up a hobby you’re excited about.

Talk Through Your Feelings

Many people tend to bottle up their feelings until they end up exploding out to someone random; This behaviour isn’t healthy. On the other hand, if you talk through your problems and feelings, then the person that you’re talking to can help you to understand why you’re feeling the way that you’re feeling, and come up with ways to tackle your problems. Even if they don’t have any wisdom for you, sometimes just talking to someone can help you come up with a solution on your own.

Get Enough Sleep

Of course, it’s important to be active if you want to stay healthy, but this doesn’t mean that your sleep should suffer as a consequence. Getting enough sleep doesn’t mean that you aren’t going to get ill, but lack of sleep has had links to a number of health problems, including obesity, diabetes, and heart disease. If you don’t get enough sleep, you are also highly unlikely to be in the best of moods. There is a reason that people say that you’ve got out of the wrong side of the bed when you’re cranky.

You are made up of two incredibly important parts, your body and your mind, so you have to make sure that you take care of them, and keep them healthy if you want to live your life to the fullest. It might not be easy, but it will be worth it in the end.
